Can Carbonated Drinks Corrode Stainless Steel Bottles?

For any OEM brand, selecting the right stainless steel grade will keep your bottles free from corrosion. This means you will neither experience any warranty claims nor have low-quality products, but ensure long-term brand reputation.

As a matter of fact, carbonated drinks cannot corrode stainless steel bottles manufactured from high-quality material. To understand how this works, we will explore facts about this to help you make an informed business decision.

How Stainless Steel Bottles Resist Carbonic Acid Corrosion

How Stainless Steel Bottles Resist Carbonic Acid Corrosion

· Chromium Oxide Passive Layer

To begin with, stainless steel bottles are made from steel materials with a minimum of 10.5% chromium, which reacts with oxygen to form a very thin layer of chromium oxide.

At its best, the chromium oxide film acts as an inert barrier between the base metal and the liquid coming in contact with the metal. Therefore, at pH 3.0 to 4.0, the carbonic acid is too weak to break this film and thus poses no danger to 304 and 316 stainless steel bottles.

As a private-label brand, this will translate to fewer warranty claims, longer product life and clients having trust in your products. Therefore, this makes it a perfect choice for marketing soda or even sparkling water.

· Self-protected Surface

Many experts point to the capacity to renew the passive layer in contact with the environment as a commercial aspect of food-grade stainless steel.

If the chromium oxide layer is compromised during use, oxygen will react immediately with the exposed chromium in the environment, restoring the passive layer.

The automatic regeneration of the passive layer is what sets high-quality stainless steel apart from other metals. Therefore, even if you offer a warranty, there is no need to worry about return or rejection of stainless steel water bottles by retailers due to minor scratches.

· Why Carbonation Cannot Break the Protection Layer

Often, carbonic acid is considered a weak acid because of the partial ionization of its molecules in water; this implies that the number of hydrogen ions is always low.

When you dissolve chromium oxide, the passive film will require strong acids and a longer time, with much lower pH levels than those found in carbonated drinks.

For over 10 years, we have been manufacturing bottles; our R&D teams have tested both the 304 and 316 stainless steel materials. None has shown signs of reaction or corrosion when in direct contact with carbonated drinks. Our stainless steel water bottles meet the strict FDA safety standards.

Conditions that Can Cause Corrosion

Conditions that Can Cause Corrosion

· Poor-quality Stainless Steel Grade

304 (18/8) is the ideal standard industry grade of stainless steel for making drinkware that comes into contact with food. They offer good resistance to rust due to the presence of carbonic acid and citric acid in the beverages.

The 201-grade stainless steel, on the other hand, reduces production costs by replacing nickel with manganese. While it may look the same, it is less corrosion-resistant and performs poorly with acidic carbonated beverages.

Therefore, when evaluating manufacturers, it is important to request test certificates examining the composition of water bottle material. Through this, your team can verify the composition of the raw material to ensure they meet the right quality specification.

· Damaged Passive Layer

Did you know that cleaning agents containing chlorine, bleach, and metal scourers are harmful to the passive layer formed by chromium oxide on stainless steel bottles?

This is what leads to corrosion-prone surfaces that become vulnerable to attacks from acidic drinks. Any time an acidic drink comes into contact with a compromised passive layer, the steel becomes prone to pitting corrosion.

There are two things here – always ensure you attach instructions on how to clean the bottles, as this helps them to adopt safe processes. Second, you must ensure the stainless steel bottle manufacturer follows standardized passivation and surface finishing processes.

· Storing Acid Beverage for Very Long Time

Keeping extremely acidic beverages, including energy drinks, citrus soft drinks, or fermented drinks with a pH less than 4.0, for longer than 24 hours will increase acid exposure to the inside surfaces of the bottle.

Although both 304 and 316 stainless steels withstand brief exposure to such acidic beverages, long storage exceeds the material’s capabilities.

FAQs

FAQs

Is sparkling water safe in stainless steel bottles?

Absolutely, with a pH level of about 3.0-4.0, sparkling water is resistant to certified 304 and 316 food-grade stainless steel.

So far, no laboratory has provided evidence of metal leaching into the water from well-manufactured stainless steel bottles when storing and using sparkling water.

How long should you store carbonated drinks in stainless steel water bottles?

The most appropriate way is to keep them for immediate consumption in stainless steel water bottles, preferably within 12-24 hours after filling.

Extending beverages that are highly acidic beyond 24 hours increases the amount of acid exposure that food-grade stainless steel cannot endure.

Can you put soda in stainless steel bottle?

Yes, you have options like 304 or 316 certified stainless steel, which will not pose any problems containing soda or Coke.

Do not use low-quality 201 stainless steel bottles for carbonated drinks, as they offer poor corrosion protection.

What is the risk of pressure build-up in stainless steel bottles with carbonated drinks?

Generally, carbonated beverages produce CO₂, which creates pressure in closed stainless steel bottles, especially in warm surroundings.

Always make sure that there is space left when bottling, avoid shaking the bottle, and open the lid carefully to relieve the pressure slowly.
