Should I Choose Acrylic Cups Or Glass Cups?

Acrylic and glass are regarded as two similar materials for making cups. However, there are significant differences between acrylic cups and glass cups from a professional perspective. This article will analyze their differences from five aspects, helping you choose the most suitable materials for your business.

5 Different Aspects of Acrylic Cups And Glass Cups

5 Different Aspects of Acrylic Cups And Glass Cups

Durability

Acrylic is a type of plastic, and its hardness is not very high. It may develop minor scratches during daily use. Although it is as clear as glass, its surface may fog up after a period of time if not maintained properly. Acrylic is not resistant to strong solvents and oils, and it is prone to staining. Moreover, acrylic is not resistant to high temperatures. The recommended usage temperature should not exceed 176℉ (80℃).

However, acrylic’s impact resistance is 10 to 20 times that of glass. It won’t be easily broken when it gets bumped. Even if it were to break, it wouldn’t produce the dangerous small fragments like those from glass.

The hardness of glass is extremely high. It makes its surface resistant to being scratched and worn. The glass is resistant to corrosion, high temperature, and does not age easily. Glass is also not prone to picking up odors.

But as is well known, glass is very prone to breaking when dropped. Moreover, glass is extremely sensitive to temperature changes. If you pour boiling water into a cold glass, it is very likely to break. Acrylic cups are less likely to cause such a situation.

If your product is mainly used in the catering industry and requires high-temperature sterilization or holding hot drinks. It is recommended that you choose glass cups. If the main function of your product is to hold cold drinks or be carried around, acrylic cups would be a better choice.

Heat Retention

Glass cups are usually of a single-layer structure, and it is very difficult to make them with a double-layer design. This makes it almost incapable of retaining heat. However, you can add a fabric or silicone insulation cover to it. But the insulation effect is still limited.

Acrylic can be used to make cups with a double-layer structure. The common double-layer structure can retain heat or coldness for 2 to 4 hours. Or you can choose to evacuate the middle layer or fill it with insulation foam to achieve a better insulation effect. It can retain heat for 6 hours and coldness for 12 hours.

If your main customers require cups with insulation properties, acrylic is a recommended choice. If your target customers don’t care about the insulation property of the cups, then both of these options would be okay.

Weight and Convenience

The density of acrylic (PMMA) is half that of glass. So the acrylic cup of the same size is lighter than the glass cup. Moreover, as shatterproof drinkware, acrylic cups are more suitable for carrying around when going out.

Therefore, if your product is mainly used for outdoor dining, by the pool, or for children, it is recommended that you choose acrylic cups. Acrylic cups are also suitable for some semi-formal gatherings, such as exhibitions.

If your product is mainly used in high-end restaurants, coffee shops, wine tasting venues, and other such settings, glass cups would be the best choice.

Customization

The surface treatment of acrylic cups is very diverse and flexible. It can be carried out to modify the appearance and feel of the cup by post-processing, such as polishing, texturing, and coating. You can also customize the color, transparency, and frosted effect of the acrylic cups.

In addition, many modern acrylic cups adopt a double-layered structure. Between the layers, decorative materials such as sequins, mica powder, UV-reactive pigments, iridescent flakes,  or lava flow effects can be filled. This design enhances the aesthetic appeal of the acrylic cup. However, glass cups are difficult to achieve this effect.

Glass cups are usually of a single-layer structure and appear simple and elegant. The colors of glass are usually limited, and the design patterns are not as diverse as those of acrylic. The glass cups can be treated with various surface finishing methods such as polishing, sandblasting, etching, and painting.

Some merchants sell bottle covers along with the glass water bottles. This not only enhances the appearance of the glass cup but also helps protect it from being easily broken.

If your target customers are young people who are into fashion, acrylic cups would be more suitable for you. Because acrylic cups have a high degree of customizability, they can be designed in a wide variety of ways. If your target customers prefer a high-end quality product, then glass cups would be a better choice.

Cost

In terms of production costs, the cost of glass cups is higher than that of acrylic cups. Although the price of glass raw materials is lower than that of acrylic, the production of glass cups requires high-temperature melting, which consumes more energy. And the molds for glass cups are also more expensive than those for acrylic cups, because they need to withstand high temperatures.

In terms of transportation costs, if charged by volume, the cost of glass cups and acrylic cups of the same capacity would be approximately the same. However, if the charge is based on weight, the glass cup will cost more than the acrylic cup. Moreover,  glass cups are more likely to be damaged during transportation and storage because of their fragility.

If your customers are sensitive to price, acrylic water bottles will be the best choice. If your product is targeted at the high-end market, glass cups would also be a good choice.

FAQ

FAQ

Which Certification Is Needed for Acrylic Cups vs Glass Cups for the US Market?

For the US market, acrylic cups should meet FDA under 21 CFR 177.1010, with migration testing. Glass cups should meet FDA with lead and cadmium leaching tests under FDA 7117.06 / 07, and California Prop 65 compliance.

Is the Acrylic Cup Environmentally Friendly?

Acrylic is recyclable, but the recycling rate is lower than that of glass. But some enterprises have already launched bio-based acrylic made from corn stalks. Although the recycling rate of glass is 100%, more energy is consumed during production and transportation.

Do Acrylic Cups and Glass Cups Contain BPA or BPS?

Food-grade acrylic (PMMA) cups are BPA-free and BPS-free. Glass cups are naturally BPA-free and BPS-free. However, it is important to pay attention to the levels of lead and cadmium in glass cups.

Are Acrylic Cups and Glass Cups Dishwasher-safe?

Many acrylic cups are top-rack dishwasher safe, but this depends on the specific circumstances. The high-temperature environment inside the dishwasher may accelerate the aging process of acrylic cups. To extend its service life, hand washing is more recommended.

Most glass cups are not recommended to be washed in the dishwasher. Alternating temperatures and the collision of tableware can easily cause the glass cups to break.

Can a Glass Cup Be Put in a Microwave Oven?

Ordinary glass cups, or those with metal rims, must not be placed in the microwave oven. However, specially treated heat-resistant glass or glass cups clearly marked as safe for use in microwave ovens can be heated in a microwave oven.

Should the Hotel Choose Glass Cups or Acrylic Cups?

If it is a high-end hotel, it is recommended to use glass cups. Because acrylic cups are prone to wear during use, which can negatively affect the customer’s experience. If it is a family hotel or an economy hotel, acrylic cups are more cost-effective and durable.
