Plastic water bottles are one of the most popular types of drinkware. In fact, plastics are also divided into many different types. Among them, Tritan and PP are regarded as relatively high-quality plastics. If you are selecting the right materials for your plastic water bottle product, this article will offer you some references.
Material Composition of Tritan and PP

Tritan
Tritan is a copolyester resin material launched by the American company Eastman Chemical Company in 2007. Tritan is the trade name of this material.
During the production process of Tritan polymer, BPA is not used. The recycling label is Class CP. Different grades of Tritan can meet various requirements, including versions with higher temperature resistance. These properties make Tritan ideal for high-end water bottle manufacturing. If your target market is the high-end segment, Tritan is the top choice.
PP
PP (Polypropylene) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic that is formed by polymerizing propylene monomers. It is one of the most widely used commercial plastics today. Its density is approximately 0.89–0.92 g/cm³, making it the lightest among all commercial plastics. PP is naturally free of BPA, and its recycling label is PP #5.
PP is the most common and a go-to material for cost-effective water bottle production. If your product aims to enter the market quickly, PP is a good choice.
Properties of Tritan Water Bottles vs PP Water Bottles

Heat Resistance
Tritan Water Bottles
The temperature resistance range of Tritan varies by model. The typical temperature range is approximately -40℉ to 212℉( -40°C to 100°C). Some Tritan water bottles can withstand direct contact with boiling water without deformation or releasing harmful substances.
The glass transition temperature of the Tritan HX100 model can reach up to 120°C. Under different model conditions, Tritan can withstand a maximum temperature of approximately 109°C.
Tips: The glass transition temperature is the point at which a plastic changes from being hard to becoming soft. At low temperatures, it is hard and brittle like glass. As the temperature rises to a certain point, it suddenly becomes soft and elastic.
PP Water Bottles
The heat resistance of PP is superior to that of Tritan, reaching up to 160–170°C. PP water cups can withstand liquid at about 130°C and can be subjected to boiling water filling and steam sterilization.
PP is the only common plastic that can be directly placed in a microwave oven (make sure the product indicates microwave compatibility). PP will become brittle at temperatures below 0°C and has lower low-temperature toughness compared to Tritan.
Transparency and Visual Effect
Tritan Water Bottles
Tritan has extremely high optical transparency, approaching that of glass. Its light transmittance is approximately 92%. Tritan water bottles do not yellow easily over time, maintaining a long-lasting visual effect.
For those applications where the appearance of liquids needs to be displayed, we recommend that you choose Tritan water bottles.
PP Water Bottles
The transparency of PP is significantly lower than that of Tritan, presenting a mostly translucent or opaque milky white appearance. After long-term use, PP water bottles may become more cloudy.
Durability and Impact Resistance
Tritan Water Bottles
Tritan has extremely excellent impact resistance. When dropped, Tritan water cups are less likely to crack or break, making them safer than glass. Moreover, Tritan is harder than PP, and the surface of the water cups is less prone to scratches. If your target customers place great importance on the durability of plastic water bottles, then you can choose Tritan.
PP Water Bottles
PP has good toughness. When a PP water bottle drops, it absorbs the impact by deforming rather than shattering, so its shock resistance is also good. The bending fatigue resistance of PP is also very good. It is very suitable for water bottles that require squeezing, such as cycling water bottles.
However, it is not as durable as Tritan and is prone to being scratched.
Corrosion Resistance and Odor Resistance
Tritan Water Bottles
Tritan has excellent resistance to acids and alkalis, and is not easily corroded by acidic drinks such as juice and coffee. Tritan water bottles also do not retain any unpleasant odors easily. So Tritan water bottles are easy to clean.
PP Water Bottles
PP also has good chemical stability and does not react with most acids, bases, or organic solvents. It is also not prone to releasing harmful substances. However, PP has certain permeability to oils. After long-term use, PP water cups are more likely to absorb odor and oil stains.
Safety
Tritan Water Bottles
Tritan does not contain BPA, BPS, or any other bisphenol substances. It also does not contain phthalates. Tritan has obtained food safety certifications from multiple countries and regions, such as the US FDA (Food Contact Notification FCN No. 729), European EFSA, etc. And Tritan is the designated material for infant products in Europe and the United States. Tritan water bottles are suitable for kids’ use.
PP Water Bottles
PP also does not contain BPA. The FDA food contact certification standard is 21 CFR 177.1520, which complies with international food contact material regulations. However, PP is prone to brittleness and discoloration when exposed to ultraviolet rays. When PP water bottles are exposed to the outdoors for a long time, UV stabilizers need to be added.
PP is widely used in the manufacture of daily food-contact products, such as plastic water bottles and food containers. For water bottles, PP is a mature and safe choice. But you should know, it is less popular in the BPA-free promotion campaign compared to Tritan.
Applications of Tritan and PP Water Bottles
